Before you start writing any article, one of the first things you need to ask yourself is “Who’s my audience?”

Here’s a quick primer to help you answer that question (which can be quite a complicated one):

1. Is there a level of familiarity between you and your audience?
2. Are you writing for colleagues or someone else?
3. How do they expect to receive this message?
4. Are they looking for some level of interaction?
5. Are they more interested in being spoken to with direct messages?
6. What’s their connection to the topic?
7. Is it for their business/livelihood?

Conduct a touchpoint review of your website, documenting the places you currently collect email addresses. Also, identify places to add permission-based, opt-in language. For example, if you have a customer service-oriented “Contact Us” form, include a check box to give visitors the chance to receive future marketing emails.
