Spam Filters – They Like Things Done Correctly! Part 2
by John Sheridan, Mailing Manager
Repost

Anyone who has conducted an email marketing campaign will know that spam filters are perhaps their worst enemy. There are certain words and phrases that to spam filters are like a red rag to a bull, but surprisingly, there are still an extraordinary number of email marketers who fail to pick up on this.

What Not to Say to a Spam Filter

Wording that is guaranteed to get right up a spam filter’s programme is blatant ‘sales talk’. Good examples of which are:

  • Money back guarantee
  • Low risk
  • Risk free
  • No obligation
  • Order now
  • Free offer
  • No catch

Not addressing your email correctly will also ensure its swift passage into oblivion. Never use ‘To the recipient’, Dear Friend’ or to ‘The business owner’. If you do, you’ll just be wasting your time. Address the recipient by name if you know it or ‘Dear Sir/Madam’.

There are Others Out There

There are of course other words and phrases that spam filter find offensive and will throw away in a fit of pique. The trick is to eliminate as many as possible, and sometimes only trial and error will help you to do that. Once you’re happy with the content of your email and sure you’ve followed all the rules regarding coding etc, then it’s ready to send.

Obvious but Worth a Mention

Get it right and your emails will sail through without a care in the world: get it wrong and the filters will have them in bin faster than Jeremy Clarkson in a Bugatti Veyron. So, the sooner you master the art of getting your emails past the spam filters, the sooner you will start enjoying more positive results.
