Email Marketing: Optimizing for Mobile image Smart Phone with Social Media 293x300

Email marketing continues to be an important part of the bigger picture in marketing a business online. However, the concept is still having growing pains trying to fit into the emerging mobile picture. Constant Contact recently found out that 75% of all people surveyed would delete an email that isn't customized for mobile phones. That's a wake up call to fix the problem. In that regard, email has suddenly joined the complicated fray in figuring out how to look presentable on smartphones and tablets.

You might think an email would be simple enough to fit into the mobile environment. But it's not necessarily that easy and requires some thought in assuring an email is easily readable without looking too austere or looking like spam.

Don't Use Too Much Text

If you want your emails to fit properly into the mobile format, it's best to craft an email that's as short as possible. That's because in mobile format, scrolling is a big problem in trying to read text. When an email isn't formatted for mobile, it's going to require scrolling from left to right and provides a reason why users otherwise abandon that kind of format in seconds.

We're at the point where we want things right now on our mobile phones and won't do that extra scrolling because it takes too much time. That is why your emails need to make their point right away.

Prevent Your Emails from Looking Like Spam

An overly short email might also give off the appearance of spam and be ignored. That's why you should name who you are and what you're offering in the first sentence so there won't be any second thoughts on what to do with that email. Some people, however, place legitimate emails in a save box and read them later when back at home on their desktop.

Regardless, this leads to one question: Should there be more to an email than just text in the world of mobile so it's read right away?

Adding Graphics and Logos

Adding images to a mobile email might become the biggest challenge of the near future. In order to get noticed, it may have to become an imperative to add at least one standout image to a mobile email so it grabs attention. These can't be too complicated because it could take the email longer to load.

Simplicity is always the best practice in designing a business logo. Using that logo or a simple image that relates to the email subject would give you a leg up over those who still think one or two-line text is the only way.

Using that image with a short call to action at the end might be the ultimate secret weapon. This also helps increase the chances your mobile email is acted upon immediately rather than placed in a save file.
